TORINO — Johnny Weir has discovered the secret to success in men's figure skating. Become Russian.
If you look, dress, talk and skate like a Russian, eventually the judges will think you're a Russian. Then you can challenge for the gold medal in the Olympic Games.
Better to be a Russian trying for the gold in men's figure skating than to be an American. Since Brian Boitano won the gold for the USA in 1988, skaters from the former Soviet Union have won the past four men's skating Olympic gold medals.
It will become five in a row in Thursday night's long program at the Palavela, the Olympic figure skating venue, unless Russia's Evgeni Plushenko is kidnapped by aliens.
Don't take my word for it. Take Johnny Weir's. He's the one giving closest chase to Plushenko here, but he also has been saying for the past month that the gold medal is Plushenko's to lose.
"I'm not conceding," Weir said Tuesday night. "I'm just being realistic."
Here's some figure skating realism for you: Weir skated fluidly, beautifully, majestically even — and, going into the long program, he's a whopping 10.66 points behind Plushenko, who landed a quad, unlike Weir, and broke the record for the most points ever given to a skater in the short program in the new judging system's three seasons.
"If he falls three times (in the long program), maybe someone can sneak past him by a point or two," said Weir, who finished a glorious second and is 41/2 solid minutes away from winning a medal at these Olympic Games. "Ten points? Maybe if it wasn't Plushenko. I've been saying it over and over. Look at his points. He has so much international support from the judges."
Wasn't it the early 1990s, when the Soviet Union collapsed, that dire warnings went out that the vaunted Soviet figure skating pipeline would soon run dry? Their rinks were in decay. Their coaches were fleeing to America. They had little money.
But, it turned out, they still had skaters like Plushenko, who, now 23, says he barely remembers the old Soviet Union. Not that it matters. Who needs cash when you have ice? And art. Plushenko trains in St. Petersburg, just a few miles from the Hermitage in one direction and the Mariinsky Theatre, home of the Kirov Ballet, in another. For the better part of this century, he has set the standard for male artistry on ice. Perhaps it's all osmosis.
Watching Plushenko mostly from afar has been the flamboyant, 21-year-old Weir, who is so into Russia he wore a CCCP jacket to practice, studies the history of the czars and hired a Russian choreographer.
"I'm teaching myself Russian," Weir said. "When I answer in Russian, she really gets excited about it."
It's Moscow on the Delaware. That's where Weir trains, Newark, Del., although the international skating trips he has earned as the three-time U.S. national champion have taken him you-know-where more than once. He has gotten to know Plushenko quite well on the Champions on Ice U.S. skating tour, as well as at competitions, all of which have given him enough of an education for a telling comparison.
"I'll say Plushenko is very modern Russian, circa now," Weir said, "and I'm more of the Baryshnikov era as far as dance and influence goes in my programs."
It's hard not to take Baryshnikov in that contest, if only he had a quad. Tuesday night, while the judges showered Plushenko with stratospheric scores, truth be told, he was not completely on top of his game. His jumps were a bit scratchy, his choreography a tad forced. Plushenko always has been the master of overwrought, faux angst, and this short program was no exception.
Still, he led, 90.66 points to Weir's understated 80.00. They are so far apart, they might as well be competing in different time zones. Last year's world champion Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland is third, dangerously close to Weir, less than a point behind.
Plushenko is the sentimental favorite here, and buttressed by his industrial-strength quad, he is unlikely to be stopped. He has been trying to win an Olympic gold medal almost as long as Michelle Kwan has. He fell in the short program at the Salt Lake City Games and settled for the silver. He missed last year's world championships because of a groin injury. Now he's healthy, and the gold medal is sitting there for the taking. It's all there for Russia, says one man who knows.
"The rest of us," Weir said, "are all fighting for the second and third spots on the podium."

Plushenko's 90.66 points put him far ahead of the USA's Johnny Weir (80.00) and 2005 world champion Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland (79.04).
American medal hope Evan Lysacek had a mistake-filled program and stands 10th with 67.55 points. American Matt Savoie slipped into eighth with 69.15.
Plushenko's short program total score was the best ever under skating's new scoring system. The points awarded some elements have changed since it was first used in 2003. It didn't make its world championship debut until 2005, and it's being used in the Olympics for the first time.
But Plushenko's total surpassed his previous world best of 87.20 in the Cup of Russia in November.
Weir, a fan of Russian culture and skating who has been lauding Plushenko all season, was wowed.
"I was like, 'Oh ... my ... god, 90 points in one program," Weir said. "It's wild. I didn't think anyone would get past 80, and to see a score of 90 is really incredible."
About half of the late-arriving fans at the Palavela arena were in their seats when Plushenko, 23, took the ice as the second skater of the night. He was clad in black with a modest array of sequins.
He opened by landing his big jump combination, a quadruple toe loop (with a split-second of suspense) and a triple toe loop, for a total of 13.86 points. He added a triple axel for 9.36 points and triple Lutz to rack up 7.43 points in the new system that replaced the 6.0 standard.
Skating to the opera music of Tosca, he did his step sequence with passionate hand gestures and finished in a spinning blur, his blondish hair flying. Russian fans waved red, white and blue flags.
Afterward, Plushenko touched his hand to the ice at the spot where he landed his quad. A gesture to the skating gods?
"This is actually my secret," he said. "But I can tell you that I had to fight for this quad. ... But I pulled it off. I stood up. So I was just thankful for that."
While awaiting his scores, Plushenko kissed his wedding ring. He was married last year to the former Maria Ermak. Wedding decorations included white flowers simulating a pair of skates.
"He gave me a hug when I saw him the first time here, and I asked how his wife was doing," Weir said.
Plushenko was world champion in 2001, 2003 and 2004. In the 2002 Olympics, he missed his quad in the short. His fourth place in the short all but eliminated him from gold medal contention. He wound up with silver, behind only fellow Russian Alexei Yagudin.
Plushenko had multiple injuries leading to the 2005 worlds. Since they were in Moscow, he gave it a try. In the short, he fell on his quad and then withdrew. "I try to do the impossible," he said in Moscow.
Russia went on to win three of the four golds in the 2005 worlds. Plushenko's absence probably cost Russia a sweep.
In March 2005, he had two surgeries to repair hernias. He came back this season to win the Grand Prix final, his seventh Russian title and his fifth European title.
Weir, third behind Plushenko in the Cup of Russia, came home from the event mightily impressed. "He's the men's superstar for this year. ... I don't think anyone's going to beat him for this Olympics," Weir said in December.
What will it take to beat Plushenko here? "If he falls three times, maybe, maybe someone could squeak by him a point or something," Weir said Tuesday night.
Russia has won three consecutive Olympic men's golds in figure skating: Yagudin in 2002, Ilia Kulik in 1998 and Alexei Urmanov in 1994. Now Plushenko aims to continue the streak.
Born in Volograd, Russia, he started skating at 4. Quickly identified as a talent, he went at 11 to St. Petersburg to train with Russian coach Alexei Mishin, who has described him back then as "slim, like a cheap chicken."
Now he's one skate away from the top of the Olympic podium.
Monday, Russia won the pairs gold with a victory by Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin. After the men's final, the Russians will go for the gold in ice dancing and the women's competition.
Plushenko and Mishin didn't want to do a news conference after Tuesday night's event. They were coaxed into it.
Plushenko took a few questions. When he was asked about Weir's comment that he was a lock for gold, Mishin signaled to him with crossed hands to cut it off.
"Guys, c'mon," Plushenko said. "Nothing happened. I just skated today perfect. I skated clean. I did my job today good.
"We will talk after the free program."

ANDR, профессионалы катаются не за медали, они ставят красивое шоу и ездят с ним по странам где это любят и готовы платить. В общем получают деньги. и думаю много больше, чем призовые у любителей. До сих пор катаются в профессионалах насколько я знаю те, кто выигрывал Олимпиады в начале 90-х. Очень часто они дают представления в США.

The defending gold medal Olympic champions are done at the 2006 Winter Games, sent home without ceremony. Not one Canadian NHL star could generate any offense Wednesday at Torino Esposizioni, and Martin Brodeur's superhuman effort wasn't enough to prevent the Russians from winning 2-0 in a quarterfinal. The Canadians were left to explain how they could go 0-for-8 on their power play, how none of their 27 shots could get by Evgeni Nabokov. But more than that, how could they lose 2-0 to Finland and 2-0 to Switzerland — in the same building — considering the talent they have: Joe Thornton. Jarome Iginla. Dany Heatley. Simon Gagne. Their depth was considered the best in the field.
"Guys with good offensive talent couldn't seem to finish off, because we were still relying on our individual skills and couldn't get over that hump" coach Pat Quinn said.
Executive director Wayne Gretzky, looking somber, said he would re-evaluate his role in Hockey Canada but did hope to be involved in the 2010 Vancouver Games.
"It's been a horrible three months for me, and personally, as you get older, your health becomes more important, and it's been a very rough three months," he said.
Gretzky lost both his mother and grandmother in that time.
Only two days before playing Russia, Gretzky had called on Canada's young players to spark the veterans the same way young Canadians did in 2002. But it was the young Russians, Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin, who infused their team with energy, and it was the veteran Russians who led.
With Todd Bertuzzi off in the penalty box, Viktor Kozlov pounced on a loose puck and maneuvered around Pronger before feeding Ovechkin, who found an open side. Equally impressive was the play of captain Alexei Kovalev, who in the last minute stole the puck from Pronger, drew a penalty and scored on the power play.
"We lost in world championships to Canada last year," Russian forward Pavel Datsyuk said. "We needed to win today."
The Canadians were left reeling, trying to shed light on a 3-3 record.
"These teams were ready for us," Brodeur said. "Nobody wanted to give us a break. All tournament long, it didn't matter what team we play, they give us their A game. It's really disappointing."
Canada captain Joe Sakic was more blunt. "We didn't deserve to win," he said. "The level was a lot higher here than it was in 2002."
It's the first time since 1992 the Canadians haven't been in Olympic medal contention. The next Winter Games are an eon away, and until then the Canadians will face endless questions at home about how this one ended, how a legion of NHL players couldn't score, how a hockey superpower fizzled.
Said Quinn: "Nobody could make me worse than I feel now. We had good expectations for ourselves, and we didn't meet those expectations."

Twenty-six years since a bunch of American college hockey players, fresh off Herb Brooks' months-long boot camp, peeked through the Russians' veil of invincibility and forged a miracle. Twenty-six years since the proudest American Olympic moment this side of Jesse Owens.
The Americans look dejected after Finland pushed the ejection button on Wednesday. Erik Cole, 26, couldn't even stand straight as the Finns advanced to the semifinals.

Now, 26 years later, here was multimillionaire National Hockey League veteran Mike Modano, standing before the American media just seconds after the United States lost, 4-3, to Finland. Here was Modano, the Dallas Stars center, trying to explain how Team USA could have laid such an egg on the international stage, how they could have gone 1-4-1 in this tournament and exited with an eighth-place finish.
Here was Modano, another American who just doesn't get it.
"Basically, we were on our own as far as arrangements, flights, hotels, tickets," Modano said, using a post-game interview to slam USA Hockey, the governing body for amateur hockey. "Normally, that's something you don't have to think about. That's something that should be taken care of so we don't have to worry about it and can focus on hockey and get ready to play."
Ah, so that was it. USA Hockey forgot to put a mint on Modano's pillow every evening. Can you imagine Mike Eruzione or Jim Craig trying that one 26 years ago? They'd still be skating "Herbies" right now.
How do you think that sounds to team general manager Don Waddell, who was one of the last players cut from the 1980 Olympic team? When he was asked after the game how he felt now, having come so far only to see his dream die, he went silent, finally breaking down in tears.
Modano, though, he wouldn't shut up. His punchless team had just come all this way, leaving with only a victory over Kazakhstan and a tie with Latvia to show for its troubles, and he was whining about a bunch of old men living in Colorado Springs.
Now we've heard it all: Bad auras, crazy bus schedules and this.
"Everybody has to do it," said Finn forward Teemu Selanne. "There's no help. Nobody had direct flights here. It's not easy for anybody. You have jet lag and then you play six games in eight nights."
If it means anything, Team Canada had all its travel and ticket issues handled by its federation. Lot of good that did: Wayne Gretzky's boys committed the ultimate national sin, losing later in the night to the Russian Federation.
The Americans didn't fail to reach the medal round for the fifth time in seven Olympics because Modano and friends had to go to travelocity.com. They failed for a number of other reasons, including the fact they played like a bunch of testosterone-addled cementheads in this quarterfinal game.
They failed because:
They were too old.
Team USA's braintrust knew that coming in, and feared the team's age might doom them, but they had very few options. Right now, American hockey exists in a generational vacuum. The best players are all either too old or too young. Twenty-six years after the miracle, it would appear American hockey hasn't taken full advantage.

Rick Dipietro had a tough day in goal for the U.S. in its Olympic finale.
"It (age) was a concern of mine before the Games, although I thought (44-year-old Chris) Chelios was terrific," said Team USA head coach Peter Laviolette. "It affected us a little. We didn't seem to have the same pop as a group."
This team, like most American all-star teams, cannot learn quickly how to play as a team.
The U.S. basketball team's disintegration in Athens is the ultimate example. We are a nation of rugged individualists. It is our blessing and our curse. And our players are trained in a number of different systems, while the Swedes, Finns, Czechs and others grow up playing together, all of them groomed in the same, general way.
"We are a little country," Selanne said, smiling a jagged, bloody smile, courtesy of a Derian Hatcher stick. "We enjoy playing together. That's what it takes."
It's worth pointing out that Laviolette and Waddell passionately defended USA Hockey, even though nobody outside of the hockey world knows who they are. Apprised of Modano's comments, Waddell said, "That's very disappointing."
And it is, even if there's a germ of truth behind his general contention that the organization needs new blood and better leadership. What could inspire an athlete to come off the ice after a terrible loss and lay the blame at the feet of USA Hockey? Is that the pressing issue when you've just been punted and sent home a mere eight days after your arrival?
Puh-leeze.
As Modano spoke, Selanne stood a few feet away, speaking to several reporters. There was still dried blood on his chin. He couldn't have been any happier.
"I'm disappointed I lost three teeth," he said. "But that's a little sacrifice to try for a gold medal."
Twenty-six years after an overmatched bunch of amateurs gave their heart and soul for a gold medal, that now seems like a price the Americans are no longer willing to pay.
